Sushi rolls are at the top of my list of favourite foods to treat myself. It’s the perfect lunch or dinner, eating out with a group of friends or as a takeout while binge-watching a show on Netflix. I LOVE Asian Cuisine and sushi definitely makes the cut. However, it can be a little pricey, at an average of €8 per roll. We are making Homemade Sushi at only €3.50 per roll. That means you can eat twice as much (wink wink). Also because it’s really fun, delicious and you can satisfy sushi cravings instantly. The most popular style of sushi maki rolls are Futomaki and Uramaki. So, I am sharing both styles in this homemade sushi recipe!

Homemade sushi rolls

Futomaki style sushi has a Nori seaweed sheet on the outside and Uramaki style sushi (also called the ‘Inside-Out Roll’) has rice on the outside hiding the Nori. My favourites are the Philadelphia Salmon Uramaki and Beef Stir Fry Futomaki rolls. However, you can really play around with the ingredients according to your personal taste. Usually, sushi rolls have one protein source and a variety of vegetables.

Other Homemade Sushi Roll ideas:
  1. Teriyaki Chicken
  2. California Crab
  3. Spicy Tuna
  4. Tempura Prawn
  5. Alaska Salmon
  6. Crispy Tofu

You will need a bamboo mat, sushi rice and rice vinegar, in addition to the other ingredients. All of the ingredients (inc. the mat) will cost around €35 and this makes 10 rolls; that’s only €3.50 per roll! AND you can reuse many things the second time you make them, such as the sushi mat, leftover sauces and rice vinegar.

I think Sushi rolls are one of those love-it-or-hate-it foods. Believe it or not, the first time I tried sushi, I absolutely hated it. A few years later, I tried it again and I was hooked. That’s when I realized what I didn’t like the first time was the raw fish. Traditional Japanese Sushi is all about the raw seafood. But if you’re a picky eater, like me, you can still enjoy a Westernized style of sushi. These Philadelphia Salmon Uramaki and Beef Stir Fry Futomaki rolls are absolutely delicious. So get rolling!

As always, let me know if you make them, I’d love to see!

Happy indulging,

Kim x

Homemade sushi rolls

Sushi rolls are a popular choice from Japanese Cuisine. Homemade Sushi Rolls are easy to make, customizable to personal taste and delicious.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Assembling Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 50 minutes

Ingredients

Sushi

  • 900g Sushi Rice (Around 4 cups)
  • 5 cups Water
  • 1/2 cup Rice Vinegar
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 10 Nori Seaweed Sheets

Beef Stir Fry

  • 200g Cube Steak
  • Oil of choice, to fry
  • 2 Bell Peppers, chopped
  • 2 Onions, finely minced
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Teriyaki Sauce

Philadelphia Salmon Roll

  • 200g Smoked Salmon
  • 90g Cream Cheese
  • 1 Cucumber, small
  • 1 avocado, ripe
  • Sesame Seeds

Instructions

Sushi Rice

  1. Soak rice in water and drain. Do this several times until the water runs clear. In a large pot on high heat, pour in the water and sushi rice and cover with a lid. Once it reaches a boil, turn down to a low heat and remove the lid.
  2. Let simmer for around 20 minutes, until the rice is fully cooked. Stir a few times while it's simmering. Then, turn off the heat and let cool. Add the rice vinegar, salt and sugar and gently stir. Warning: It gets very sticky. Set aside while preparing the other ingredients for inside the sushi.

Beef Stir Fry Roll

  1. For the Beef Futomaki, saute the onions in oil. Then, add garlic and bell peppers. Saute until the bell peppers are soft and transfer to a bowl. Sear the beef in oil to desired doneness. Sprinkle with garlic powder and salt. Let rest, then cut into long strips. Set aside. Now, we can start assembling.
  2. Place your seaweed sheet directly on the sushi mat, shiny side down. Then, with wet hands gently place the rice all over the sheet, leaving one edge clear (the end). Place the beef strips and stir fry ingredients 1/3 of the way in. Drizzle with teriyaki sauce. Enjoy!

Philadelphia Salmon Roll

  1. For the Salmon Uramaki, slice the cucumber and avocado into cube-shaped strips.
  2. Tightly cover the sushi mat with plastic wrap so the rice won't stick to it. With wet hands, place the rice on the wrapped mat. Then, place a seaweed sheet on top of the rice. Spread a thick layer of cream cheese onto the seaweed, leaving one edge clear. Then, add the smoked salmon, avocado and cucumber a 1/3 of the way in.
  3. Using your sushi mat, make a small fold inwards at the start of your roll. Then, slowly start rolling, while holding the sushi for a tight roll. Sprinkle the Salmon roll with sesame seeds. Slice each roll into 6 pieces.
  4. Serve with soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. Enjoy!

Notes

Customize your sushi rolls to your personal taste! You can get very creative with your ingredients.

Wrap tightly in clingfilm and refrigerate. Eat within 24 hours, or sooner if using raw fish.

Tip: Prepare your ingredients while the rice is on the stove. That way, you can start rolling your sushi as soon as the rice has cooled.
